It’s Been Real

As my fellowship at The Louis Armstrong House Museum comes to a close, I must recollect on the fundamental experiences I’ve gained during my time here.

I’ve learned a plethora of skill sets that will allow me to have a prosperous professional career moving forward. I became familiarized with all areas of operations at this organization. Every day I eagerly lead numerous historic house tours to a wide variety of visitors. My daily duties included maintaining the front desk of The Welcome Center and processing purchases in the Museum Shop. In the Welcome Center, I informed guests about our current exhibitions and upcoming events, while answering all inquiries. I actively participated in campaigns to increase community engagement at the museum.

Not only has the past 10 months shaped the outlook of my professional life, but my personal life as well. Relocating to NYC from Mississippi for this fellowship has had many challenges in itself. Things as simple as a daily commute back and forth to work are drastically different. At home I was used to traveling by car, yet upon arriving to the big city it was mind boggling to adjust to the complex transit systems. Even the diversity of the neighborhoods was intriguing to me. Of course it wasn’t hard for me to adjust to the wide variety of foods. The hustle and bustle of the city is quite mesmerizing and I will stay in New York City following this program.

I anticipate on starting the MFA in Studio Art program at Queens College this upcoming fall. This illustrious institution is a fine fit and I am excited to continue my academic endeavors there. I will maintain my livelihood as a painting instructor at a sip and paint bar in Tribeca. I am forever grateful for this amazing opportunity, as it has positively shaped my life. It’s been fun. It’s been real.
